Research into a similar genre

Our storyline is quite a mixture of a few genres it is mainly a psychological thriller with hints of drama, mystery, crime and horror. We decided to do this as it would always create suspense for the audience, it will make them want to watch the film all the way through to find out what happens next with a shocking , unexpected twist at the end of the film.

What is a thriller?

Thriller is a broad genre, the key elements of a good thriller film is suspense, excitement and tension. They give the audience a high level of anticipation, anxiety and terror. It provides a rush of excitement, emotion with the narrative. This keeps the audience on the edge of their seats. There is usually a villain playing a key role in the story and often a victim that must overcome obstacles made by the villain.

Themes: Reality, mind, perception, death, identity, existence and black comedy.
These major subgenres help develop the plot of a psychological thriller film, shaping the characters' personalities. e.g. usually character will find the true identity/the devil side of himself/herself in psychological thriller, in which it is one of the archetypes—the loss of innocence.
Two characters usually mess with each others heads and play mind games on each other.

Low key lighting, very tense music and black and white shots(to make shadows stand out) would be an ideal.

Psychological thriller?

Psychological thriller is a specific sub-genre of the broad ranged thriller with heavy focus on the unstable emotional states of characters, in combination with mystery and thriller. However, it often incorporates elements from the mystery and drama genre, along with the typical traits of the thriller genre. In addition to drama and mystery, many psychological thrillers contain elements of, and often overlap with, the horror genre, particularly psychological horror.
Psychological thriller – Characters are no longer reliant on physical strength to overcome their brutish enemies (which is often the case in typical action-thrillers), but rather are reliant on their mental resources, whether it be by battling wits with a formidable opponent or by battling for equilibrium in the character's own mind. The suspense created by psychological thrillers often comes from two or more characters preying upon one another's minds, either by playing deceptive games with the other or by merely trying to demolish the other's mental state

How does this link to our film?
Our film links to this as it is based on the idea of free-will and what is morally right and wrong. The film is based on the mind as she has vital important decisions to make however the loan shark playing with her mind and leading her into making dangerous and life threatening choices.

Crime thriller?

This particular genre is a hybrid type of both crime films and thrillers that offers a suspenseful account of a successful or failed crime or crimes. These films often focus on the criminal rather than a policeman. Central topics of these films include serial killers/murders, robberies, chases, shootouts, heists and double-crosses.
Often the two overlap. However, pure crime films/novels focus on a specific crime or set of crimes, and solving the mystery or tracking down the criminal, with no or little violence but more drama throughout. Thrillers are usually fiction-based and fast in pace, while crime fiction tend to be more leisurely paced, dramatic and realistic. Generally, violence is also lacking in a crime fiction, but this depends if the work is based on the mafia, where violence is intense

How does this link to our film?
The idea of crime runs throughout our film beginning with the illegal money lender/loan shark who then goes on to convince her to choose to take someones life in exchange for money. There isn't any major violence however the idea of criminal activity taking place is very clear throughout.

Mystery thriller?

Thrillers often overlap with mystery stories but are distinguished by the structure of their plots. In a thriller, the hero must stop the plans of an enemy rather than uncover a crime that has already happened. Mystery thrillers also occur on a much grander scale: the crimes that must be prevented are serial or mass murder, terrorism, assassination, or the overthrow of governments. Jeopardy and violent confrontations are standard plot elements in the mystery-thriller genre, unlike in the mystery genre where the story is more downbeat and dramatic.
A thriller isn't just about someone being murdered. There is always something bigger and more important at stake behind the murder that may endanger more lives. Where in a mystery the motive for a crime such as insurance fraud can be greed, in a thriller mere money doesn't come across as believable for all the terrible things the antagonist will.
