Indecent Proposal (1993)
A married woman agrees to have sex with another man for $1,000,000.
At first thought, this film is very similar to what we are going to make. Both our idea and this film play on what extremes people go through for to make money when they are money obsessed. The protagonist is female, which I believe breaks the stereotypical conventions of money related films. Male protagonists are usually the ones making money. However, in Indecent Proposal and Greed, the protagonists are independent women who can make their own choices.
Trailer
The film reviews suggest that the audience enjoyed the drama aspects of the film and made them put themselves in the characters shoes.
"If you were offered a million dollars, could the strength of your
relationship survive it? I really got into this movie, because I knew
how it would damage the couple's life."
"Struggling financially is horrible. How far would you go to get some
money? People will go the distance and sometimes take a front seat with
the devil! "Indecent Proposal" goes all the way and shakes up human
emotions.
8 out of 10"
"Would you let your wife sleep with a
man for one million dollars? Could you look at it and say that it was only
one night and you can deal with it? Would you say that your marriage is
strong enough to overcome something so meaningless?"
All of these reviews ask questions. This is the aim of our film, as we would also like our audience to ask themselves what they would do in our characters situation. Would they take the money and do what the Loan shark asked? Or would they walk away and turn the offer down, losing out on the money?

The box (2009)
A small wooden box arrives on the doorstep of a married couple, who know that opening it will grant them a million dollars and kill someone they don't know.
This film also follows the "Money in return for murder" theme which we are aiming to achieve. The protagonist in this film is yet another female, which suggests that women are seen as more gullible or greedy when it comes down to money. The way the wooden box gets delivered to them reminds me of our idea of the envelope getting delivered at the end. This film is more modern than Indecent Proposal, but still asks the question "What legnths would you go to for money?"
Trailer
Not all the film reviews for this film are positive, some of the negative ones questioned some of the plot and suggest that it doesn't make sense, realistically.
"Plot elements are thrown in randomly and nothing makes sense. Why is it
set in 1976? Why are those particular families targeted? How does the
box work? Why does the babysitter have pictures of the victims in her
room? Why do aliens give a sh*t about humans in the first place? If
these aliens are so "ethical" (funny idea), then why do they use such
sadistic methods? If the purpose of the "test" is only to evaluate
people's altruism quotient, than why torture them afterwards with
complicated mind games?"
This review suggests the audience could not relate to the storyline as it was unrealistic and didn't make sense to them. Some of the aspects of the film may have not been thought out. The Box had a 5.6 rating on IMBD.
However:
"It was a pleasant surprise, and this movie kept me interested until
the end. The plot was something new and fresh, and it unfolded at an
excellent pace that mixed in drama and emotions. I actually felt for
the characters, and I love the mystery and intrigue with the movie."
This is positive and shows a variation in opinions on this film that ours is so closely related to. This film has helped, as we no know to avoid:
. Unrealistic Storylines
. Ambiguous endings that aren't clear
. Too much detail (Keep it simple!)
The tagline of "You are the experiment" is catchy and is what we aim to create. It's simple and doesn't give much away.
These films help our group to expand on similar films that have already been created. They have both made mistakes in storylines, that we can learn from. The morals of these films are on the same lines as Greed, which will give us room to expand and improve on the initial idea.
