Film production logo

During the making of a film the production team will use a logo on everything such as posters, trailers and merchandise. Two mainstream companies are Disney and Warner Brothers. Disney have a few different logos for different films for distribution. At the beginning of a Disney film sometimes they adapt the logo to the film for example in Lilo and Stitch the castle becomes space theme. However, in Frankenweenie it becomes back and white.

This means that mainstream companies can change their logo to the film theme. Another example Warner Brothers change their logo for the Harry Potter: Chamber of Secrets to Happy Potter: Deathly Hallows. As the film becomes dark and more intense so does the logo.

However smaller independent companies just use one logo such as Film4,  and Studio Canal this is because it's not as important to their film as they are more realistic unlike an animated film or a fantasy film.

As our film is probably going to be an independent style we need a simple logo but needs to be recognisable. From a logo of a production company you can tell what type of film it is. Syncopy have a maze because their films are normally mystery and complex. Since our film is about money and "cheating" in life. I wanted to use a dark pair of dice and our production name could be Snake eyes productions or  Play Fair Productios.

Research into Viral Adverts

Viral advertising is a modern way of marketing a film to an audience. The viral advertising is quite popular with independent films. For example "Shifty" used a viral advert. They used an ad where people could take a photo of their friends and send it into the website and their photo gets put onto a CCTV photo making them look like committed a crime.

However, some big franchise films like "The Dark Knight" for example they made a newspaper which was two sided. One side was a normal paper made by Gothem news paper company. But the other side was made by the Mimes who are evil. This is good because it made more of a buzz to the audience as they had a spin off news paper.

For our film if we did do a viral advert we could do an advert for a money lending company. We have looked at KwickQuid and Pounds to Pocket loans. Fro the other ones we have looked at it seems they like to use fake or animated actors. This might be because they don't want to use real actors to distract the attention from the hard truth or interest rates.

Risk Assessments for Locations - Maddy's house and Barnsley College.

As part of our planning I have conducted risk assessments to highlight any hazards even if they are extremely unlikely we have plans on how to prevent them from happening.

Video questionnaire

Video Questionnaire

Following the results from our online audience questionnaire we have started working towards a video questionnaire.

We printed a copy of our storyline and gave it to students and tutors in our college social area, we then set up the camera and filmed each person as we asked them the same questions that we had put on our online questionnaire to gain a verbal and instant response as they didn't previously know the questions we were to ask, so no answers we were planned before.

We then transferred the footage from the tape to Final cut express so we could edit the clips to show the variety and comparisons in the responses we received.

Research into a similar films.

There have been quite a lot of films that have similar storylines and ideas to ours.
One of these is Angel Heart (1987) where his identity/soul is stolen and then is hired by someone to kill himself for money. Another similar film is The Box (2009) where a small wooden box arrives on the doorstep of a married couple, who know that opening it will grant them a million dollars and kill someone ther don't know.

Our storyline has ideas from both films in it as the money for killing someone seems to be a popular idea in psychological thrillers. Before filming we will watch both films to gain ideas for shots, lighting and costumes. We will also look at techniques and devices they have used to keep the audience on edge and create tension within the film.

Location issues

Whilst me and Maddison were creating a shot list and drwaing up a storyboard we identified that there were a few issues on the locations of certain shots been filmed and resolved each issue.

Issue 1 - on the match on action shot of her walking into the door that we would have a problem because the inside of the door would look totally different. To get around this issue we have decided to change the location so that it looks like she is in an office building. We will change the script accordingly.

Issue 2 - in the shot of her coming downstairs to open the empty fridge, we figured that her walking down the steps wouldn't make sense as we had stated in both the storyline and script that she lived in a run down flat. To resolve this issue we have changed the storyline and script to show that she is looking after her friends and house sitting whilst she is away.

From the questionnaire we are also looking at what we can change from the audience responses.

Changes

Questionnaire results - Changes?

Our first feed back questionnaire had 34 responses. This consisted of 20 females and 14 males. As our feed back is most females this could lean the responses to a more female view. This means our film would be aimed towards females.

Our next question was to see if the audience would be able to choose an appropriate certificate for the film as we were undecided between 12 and 15. However, due to there being no bad language, drugs, violence only implied. We have chosen 12.

The next question we asked was to see what our audience actually like from films and their prefered genre. However, most responses like comedy. Others liked psychological, crime, thrillers and mysterious which are all subgenres of our film.

Summary of Audience Questionnaire Responses

From gathering the information and responses to our questionnaire we summarised the responses in graphs on Google drive.

These are the following summary's:

Gender:

What certificate would you expect it to receive:

From this we could see that the certificate we have given our film - 12/12A needed reconsidering as the majority of people thought it was a 15 - to resolve this we are going to edit the storyline and script to make it have the conventions of a 15.

What is your preferred genre:
From this we can see that the majority do prefer comedy films however the rest of the answers people chose are sub-genres of our main genre

Do you understand the storyline:

This shows us that most people do understand however it may need explaining more simpler and easier for others to understand.

Where would you expect to see our film:

What genre do you think our film is:

Four people answered correctly however the film does have a few sub-genres which were all given as an answer therefore our genre is coming across quite clearly.

What do you like about our storyline:

What don;t you like about our storyline:

What changes would you make to the storyline:

Who do you feel that the film is aimed at:

Problems With Our Storyline

Problems

Storyline

In our storyline we wanted to show Destiny's living situation. However, due to location problems, we were not being able to use an area that is deprived and had difficulties finding an area of flats. To solve this problem, we decided that during the conversation between Maddy and Destiny in the park, Maddy would ask her if she would like to stay at her house as she was going away for the week. This is going to be easier to film, as we can now use one of our own houses to film in whenever we need to. This will make filming much more accessible if we need to change or re film anything.

Plot

Destiny was supposed to lose her job during a phone call from the company she worked for. We found this took too much time up of our film and was a difficult way of telling the audience that she had lost her job. To solve this we added Destiny losing her job through a letter of notice at the very beginning of our film. This takes up less time and is more clear for the audience to understand.

Audience Questionnaire

Audience Questionnaire

To gather ideas and opinions from a potential audience we created a questionnaire on Google Drive asking the questions:
  • Name
  • Age
  • Preferred genre with examples
  • Why the prefer it
  • What certificate the would expect our film to receive
  • Gender
  • What do the like about storyline
  • What don't they like about storyline
  • Any changes they would make
  • Do you understand it
  • What genre do you think it is
  • Where would you expect to see it
  • Who do they think its aimed at
Click the link below to view our questionnaire:

This then allowed us to view responses and take into consideration what people have said and allowed us to make relevant changes to the storyline and audience of the short film. The responses can also be analysed to show the most popular answers.
